Reopening Schengen Museum on 14th June 2025

40 Years of Freedom in Motion

The Schengen Museum is completely closed due to construction work. The visitor center Koch’Haus remains open. Look forward to a new experience of storytelling, memory and discovery from June 2025! However, our guided tours can still be booked without restrictions.

The initial treaty from 1985 was signed by the secretaries of Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany.

Welcome to the museum dedicated to the history and significance of the Schengen Agreement. From 14th June 2025 the museum will welcome you at its two locations in Schengen.

Intuitive, interactive and playful – The experience inside the museum is an engaging journey to experience diversity, possible intersections and integration, which also alternates moments of exploration and reflection.

The upper deck: a time machine – The signing room will allow visitors to travel back in time, transporting them to the same space that welcomed the representatives of the first signatory countries of the Agreement in 1985.

After 40 years, the term “Schengen” is still a symbol of freedom of travel and the abolition of borders in Europe. Opened in 2010, the museum is dedicated to the history and significance of the Schengen Agreement. Our 200 m² permanent exhibition traces the path from a Europe of borders to a Europe of citizens, in an interactive and entertaining way. The abolition of checks on people at internal borders marked the beginning of the implementation of one of the four fundamental freedoms laid down in the 1957 Treaty of Rome.

Our visitors say

The Schengen agreement is a very noble concept that exceeds the best values of humanity. May we all find ways to promote cooperation and innovative solutions to problems confronting the people of the world.

More to see

In addition to our museum, Schengen offers some other attractions worth seeing, such as the museum “A Possen”, which deals with wine, folklore and toys, or the Valentiny Foundation, a must for art lovers, the municipality with its green, hilly landscape, lakes, wine villages, nature reserves (Biodiversum, Haff Réimech) and gardens also invites you to take a trip in nature. The region offers an exceptional hiking landscape with magnificent views of the Moselle valley, hillside vineyards and exceptional flora and fauna. Not to mention the excellent cuisine and wine.
